AHA Peels

Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs), such as glycolic, lactic or fruit acids are natural organic substances that have been used for centuries to improve the appearance of skin. They are the mildest of the peel formulas and produce light peels for the treatment of photo damaged skin, fine lines and wrinkles, acne, acne rosacea and scarring.

These types of peels can provide smoother, brighter-looking skin and are more suited to people who don’t want the downtime to recover from a more aggressive peel.

Our expert medical team has in excess of 15 years experience and have completed more than 40,000 successful treatments. Rest assured you are in safe hands. All procedures at Cambridge Skin & Laser Clinic are performed by fully qualified doctors and nurses. We do not employ therapists or technicians. To ensure the highest ethical standards are maintained at all times staff at Cambridge Skin and Laser Clinic are never offered bonus incentives to sell treatments.

How does the treatment work?

AHA peels are a lighter less aggressive peel. Lactogel contains different concentrations of lactic acid. Lactic Acid is non-toxic and acts to maintain the normal pH of skin, it gently exfoliates whilst promoting new skin growth below the surface, without the irritation caused by some alpha hydroxy acid peels. The peel is applied to the area and as each application dries, water evaporates and the acid becomes more concentrated but the skin remains cool. The peel is designed so that the acid penetrates the deeper layers of the skin without causing damage to the surface. The depth of the peel varies depending on the strength of the chemicals used and the length of time that the peel is on the skin.

Which areas can be treated?

The peels are most effective on the face and neck areas. Small areas on back and chest can be treated for acne, photo damage and scarring. All areas must have been treated with vitamin A cream for a minimum of 3 weeks before a Lactogel peel treatment. Vitamin A ensures that your skin is properly prepared and with regular application will lead to a healthy skin.

Is it suitable for all skin types?

Lactogel works best on lighter skin types (I-III). Darker skin types (IV, V and VI) need to be assessed at consultation.

Are there any side effects?

AHA peels may cause slight tingling or stinging, redness, irritation and flaking. However, as the skin adjusts to the treatment regimen, these problems will subside. The area may appear drier for 24 – 48 hours after treatment.

How many treatments are needed?

For acne and acne rosacea we recommend between 6-12 sessions at weekly intervals. For photo damaged skin and scarring we recommend treatment once a week for 6-8 weeks

Can I continue to have laser treatment once I have Lactogel peels?

It is recommended to wait 48 – 72 hours after Lactogel prior to any laser treatment. Lactogel peels and laser therapy can be used in combination to achieve optimal results.

Can Pigmented skin be treated with peels?

Pigmented skin should not be treated with deep peels because it may increase the skins susceptibility to UV light, stimulating melanin production and worse still, may damage the melanocytes resulting in more severe pigmentation problems in the future.
