Warts And Verrucas
Warts and verrucas are caused by infection of the surface layer of the skin with human papilloma virus (HPV). The virus is very contagious and can pass from one part of the body to another or be transferred onto someone else. Not all people are equally susceptible to the virus, the reason for this remains unknown.
Most warts and verrucas naturally resolve within one to two years but it is not necessary to wait this long.
Warts can be painted with keratolytics that eventually kill the virus. The treatment may take many months and has a relatively low rate of success.
Cryotherapy is often used if topical treatment fails. The treatment involves liquid nitrogen to kill the infected tissue. Often multiple treatments are required. The treated area usually blisters and the wound can take time to heal.
Vascular lasers such as the Pulsed dye laser or the Nd:YAG lasers are the most successful method. They work by destroying the blood supply to the wart without causing damage to the surrounding skin. The laser energy heats up the wart, sealing its blood supply so the wart can no longer survive.
